EGG LAYERS

AND
DUAL PURPOSE

BIRDS

Take your pick.........................

WHITE LEGHORN: White Leghorns are ideal for the production of large, high quality, white eggs. They are bred to lay large white eggs with high interior and shell quality. These pullets are early maturing and are noted for their lack of broodiness. They are bred for their disease resistance, for their economy in feed consumption, and are noted for their adaptability to most conditions. We highly recommend our White Leghorns for any size of flock.

THE SEX-SAL-LINK BROWN (DEKALB/ISA BROWN): Commonly known as the ISA Brown. These are the hybrid brown egg layers. They are easy to raise and prolific producers of large richly colored brown eggs of excellent shell quality. They are quiet and friendly and easily trained to lay in their nests. They tend to settle for an early in the day lay, so 80 % of your picking will be done by lunch time! They are also very clean in their nests so nesting material lasts! Good air, dry bedding, good laying ration and controlled lighting are a must for peak performance!

READY-TO-LAY PULLETS:

White Leghorns & Sex-Sal-link Browns are available at the age of 19 weeks. Our Ready-to-Lays are grown from day old chicks in controlled, sanitary conditions with a complete vaccination program and beaks trimmed. Birds are grown on the floor, so customers can be assured of being able to adapt them to a floor or cage set-up, without worrying about pile-ups, crowding or coccidiosis which is common with cage raised pullets moved to a floor operation. (Some pullets may be cage-raised). Not available at most agents. Birds must be picked up at Westlock as we are not able to ship grown birds. Crates are available with a deposit of $70.00 per crate. THE RED ROCK CROSS: The traditional cross is a fine balance between egg and meat production. Roosters resemble a Barred Rock weighing in at 6.5lbs, while the trim black hen with reddish chest weighs in at 5.5lbs. Pullet chicks are solid black, while the rooster has a white spot on its head (same appearance as a Barred Rock)

THE BARRED PLYMOUTH ROCK: (White Plymouth Rock available in July only)

The Barred Plymouth Rock is one of the oldest and most popular pure breeds. They are reasonable producers of medium size creamy brown eggs. The rooster, while they make very good eating can be aggressive so a low ratio of rooster to hen is necessary for good fertility if you are planning to breed. You don't want your hens 'hiding' in their nests! They are tasty, fat free birds, easy to raise and hardy winter birds. The chicks are all black with a white spot on their heads. Available as unsexed only.

THE COLUMBIAN ROCK: These remain our heaviest of dual purpose birds. They are average layers of medium sized beige eggs. However, they remain a good choice for an all around bird with their sweet happy go lucky personality. Very good meat birds, lean and tasty and easy to keep a few over for your winter supply of eggs. The chicks are all yellow. Available as unsexed only.

The Columbian Rock is only available once in July, 2008

THE RED SUSSEX CROSSThe cross produces a predominantly white rooster, which is easier for plucking. As with the Red Rock, there is an excellent balance between good meat, decent eggs and a very easy to handle and raise flock. Pullet chicks are red, while the cockerels are yellow (same as a Red Sussex cockerel and/or the Columbian Rock).

RHODE ISLAND RED:
The Rhode Island Red bird is an excellent hardy all round bird -producing rich dark brown eggs. Given the name of the state in which it was first bred, these deep coloured birds have progressed from simply a market bird to an important dual purpose bird with good egg production. The rooster can be over protective of the very passive hens. Chicks are dark orange. Available as unsexed only.

WHITE PLYMOUTH ROCK

An excellent dual-purpose bird. Like their cousins the Barred Plymouth Rock, they lay a good size egg

and their flesh is pink and tasty. The chicks are all yellow and sold unsexed only.

The Columbian Rock is only available once in July, 2008

Dual Purpose Birds
